Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book all by yourself? Some of my students are experiencing this joy for the first time during first grade.
I teach first graders in a small rural school in Minnesota.
Many of our student population lives in poverty. Parents are working so hard to put food on the table and a roof over their heads; reading books in the evening is not always a priority. My students come to me wanting to learn how to read. I have implemented the Daily 5 into my classroom. The Daily 5 is a management system used so that I can pull a small group of readers and can be confident that my other students are doing exactly what they should be. The Daily 5 includes; read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, word work, and work on writing. With the independence of the Daily 5, I need to have many books in my classroom that my students can access. I have started a classroom library, but the kids are always looking for new and interesting books to read. I want to keep their love for reading alive, so I need to make sure my classroom library is always stocked with books that my students will enjoy reading.
My Project
Since I have started to implement Daily 5 into my classroom, my students have really loved "Reading to Self" time. Now that I am sure of what level my students are reading at and am able to find them "Good Fit" books they can enjoy. Reading a book that is just right for them is important. Having these leveled readers will give my students more choices and opportunities to find a love for reading!
Having a leveled library in my classroom will allow my students to have books that they can read and enjoy right at their fingertips.
Reading is such an important life skill, so the more proficient my first graders can be the easier school will be for them in the future. I want my students to enjoy reading books and not have to struggle all the time. Having a book that is right at their level will allow them to be confident and have fun while reading.
