Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love that my high school students have their opinions and share them. I love that they are willing to hear out different perspectives and learn beyond what they know. I also love that I am able to learn from them just as they learn from me. It's truly a collaborative effort.
The majority of my students are black and brown who are sponges for knowledge outside of what they know.
They are looking for an escape from some of the harsh realities they face, so creating that atmosphere for them is important.
My Project
I am the reading and dyslexia interventionist at MHS. Many of my students struggle with and do not enjoy reading because I believe they don't know what they would enjoy reading. Some think they cannot read at the high school level, but it is my job to help them get there.
Having my own classroom library will give the students an opportunity to discover worlds outside of their own that will help them with vocabulary, creativity, and the belief that they can read.
Books have the power to inspire and transport people to where they need to be, and I so want that for my students. They need the power of knowledge to succeed in whatever path they decide to take.
