Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The challenge facing my students is that they live in the inner city, and many are far below grade level. Reading average is four years below grade level. The librarian was laid off last year, so the school library is closed. The books on campus are old, torn, and uninspiring for the students.

Despite coming from an at risk back ground, the students have dreams of going to college.

They are very creative and love to read, and be read to. Every day at the beginning of class we have silent sustained reading for practice. The students often request to take the books home, but we don't let them, this way they have a hook to come back to class every day. Many students are far behind, but the scores are going up thanks to dedicated teachers. They enjoy project based learning, and write book reports once a month.

My Project

I hope to provide structure for the students by providing Literature Circles, Socratic Seminars, and a classroom library. The students live daily in poverty outside of the classroom, inside the walls of the school my wish is to see them feeling safe, and cared for. The books will lead to literature circles, and will aide students in their reading comprehension. They will be able to move at their own pace. They will have the help of their peers, and one on one conference with the teacher to discuss their findings. The books will also aide with Socratic Seminars to have the students write their opinions of the books and share orally with the class what they think of the stories plot, theme, and ending. Lastly, the books will add to the much needed classroom library, and will give them something to read at the start of class besides the textbook that is over the students reading level in most cases. The students will want to read instead of pretending to read for SSR.

This cause will bring inner city students from far below basic to basic, or from basic to proficient.

The books will be used in general ed. classes, and in a period 7 intervention course. Helping to spark a love of reading in a child is a gift that can never been taken away from them, despite their circumstances, and I hope for my students to find that it can be a great escape, besides television and other distractions. In the future reading can provide many new options, and open new doors.
