This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a first year teacher, I had many classic books passed down to me from veteran teachers, but our classroom definitely needs a refresh! Help me update my library with modern books that inspire my students to read. Our school and city libraries have a limited selection of books available that are culturally relevant to this generation of kids.

It's not that kids don't like to read anymore, it's that they don't have books to read.

Data has shown that as children get older, they start to lose interest in reading books. When I asked my students how many like to read, less than 30% raised their hands. After a spirited class discussion, we determined as a class that it's not that my students don't like to read, but rather it's that they don't have books that they want to read. Let's change the narrative on reading and help our children discover new worlds through words.
