My Students

The students of UCAS are special. They elect to forgo the traditional school setting, with fun opportunities for sports and clubs and electives, to make school their extra-curricular. These students double their workload to graduate high school with their associates degrees.

Not only are these high school students overachievers academically, they are good kids.

I rarely have to correct their language towards one another. They go out of their way to help students who might be different, and they value intelligence over traditional "cool" factors. It is a pleasure to teach these kids.

My Project

Everyone can likely agree that reading is beneficial to students--empathy, increased reading skills, a healthy form of escapism, and much more. Like many English teachers, our English department asks students to read a book a month to increase their skills in these areas.

Most of our students still check out books from our classroom libraries.

Sure, they technically have access through Amazon, local libraries, including the university, and more, but the proximity and convenience of our classrooms cannot be beat. Providing them with relevant, diverse, and appealing books remains a priority to me at all times.

As our students are denied so many experiences that usually come along with high school, I want them to be able to see outside themselves and draw comfort and learning from others' stories. These books will help fill in our classroom libraries--which are also the school library.
