This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our high school is a large urban public school. The majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. While the student population is roughly half Latino, what makes the school so unique is the broad diversity of student backgrounds. I have students in my classes from Russia, Transylvania, Italy (student's heritage is Indian, but he grew up in Italy), and many other countries. Hollywood is truly a melting pot for families that come to Los Angeles looking to become established here.
The other unique factor about our school is that we have a significant population of students who come from a near-by foster home.
Serving students from a foster home requires a whole other level of emotional support beyond just classroom teaching, especially in the 12th grade when they are about to "age out" of the system and are facing the question of how they will survive on their own in the very near future.
My Project
On average my 10th and 12th grade students are reading four years behind grade level and we desperately need to keep a well-stocked classroom library to help students have access to a wide range of book titles. We use a system called Accelerated Reader that monitors students' reading levels and tracks their performance on meeting monthly reading goals. This allows for everyone to read books at their independent reading level which, in addition to the guided reading in class, is a vital component according to the research. These books are checked out to students and they are able to take books home. This means that there is a great deal of wear and tear on the books, and books need to be continually repurchased, as well as adding newer titles students are interested in. All the books on my order list were added by students, not by me. This is all for them.
