I am currently a fourth grade teacher who teaches twenty one students. My students range in ages and ability. This is truly one of the most passionate groups of students that I have encountered in my 3 years of teaching. They are hungry to learn, and they have a passion to excel. The school I work at is an inner-city school located in the South Bronx NY. Our resources are limited as well as the resources of the children we service. Many of them come from broken homes, and to some school is their form of escape. Most of the children do not have educational support at home. Many of the parents are unable to assist their children academically due to hectic work schedules or lack of education. I have students in my class that are well above grade level as well as students in my class who are currently reading on a kindergarten level. I am requesting a full library for my classroom. I am requesting books that range from Kindergarten level up to fourth grade level. I want the students to be able to feel comfortable and proud to read at whatever level they are on. I want to be able to challenge the students, and allow them to have a stake in their own learning. I have found that in the past when you expose children to different types of literature it brings out their creativity. In addition, the more the students read, the more they enjoy reading, especially when they have a selection of books to choose from. Reading is the foundation of any career they may choose in their futures. My students have great potential to become future leaders. They are bright, energetic and they thrive for instruction. I want to make learning as interesting as possible for these students. My current library is extremely limited, with a vast majority of the books on a second grade level. That leaves out the students who are currently excelling and reading on grade level. It also leaves out the struggling child who is reading way below level and needs exposure to more books to help him succeed. It is important for these children to have a library so that they can be exposed to as much as possible. Please help my children become excellent readers. Help them see that books can be just as exciting as a video game or a fun trip. Each book is an adventure. Help me teach the struggling student that practice makes perfect and they too can be successful once they continue reading.
