My students need 37 books for a reading library in the classroom.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. O'Herlihy's classroom raised $846
This project is fully funded
Hello, I teach History, Science and English Language Arts in a multifaceted classroom environment. I am a special education teacher and our students range in age from 13 to 19 years of age. Ours is an inclusive classroom and we teach a ranging curriculum designed for our environment. We have a transient population with a wide breadth of ability.
Our classroom materials have to be practical for an environment like ours. Often we do not have a stable or permanent population of students, many are transitioning in and out of our school. Our students can vary in ability from the college track to drop outs who have not attended school in years prior to coming to us.
In my focus on literature of interest for the students I have been rewarded by seeing students attempt and complete their first book ever read completely. Most of our students have not had successful experiences in a classroom environment. By taking the unconventional approach we have met with success watching our students take to reading enthusiastically and fully engaged. This library we have developed, with your help and generosity, can give the students the tools they need to discover the power and joy of reading for themselves, not as some arbitrary assignment unrelated and impractical to their interests.
Your generous help and support of our classroom ensures a rather large student population has access to resources that they are largely unaccustomed to. You can help secure the tools they need to develop and take the initiative in their reading progress. This library ranges in ability level and interest in broad subjects of direct interest to our students. This powerful set of tools furthers my ability as their teacher to help them develop their cognitive abilities and their pure appreciation of reading itself.
More than half of students from low‑income households
