Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students have extremely varied levels of reading ability and motivation, but I'm confident that each student can find a book that works for them! My hope is to provide them with a wide variety of books to explore.
Students are primarily low-income, latinos from immigrant families.
Our school fosters a culture of anti-bullying, good character and community building. I teach a 6th-grade elective class that is meant to foster literacy skills, college-readiness and socio-emotional development. We are currently exploring these topics through the book "Wonder."
My Project
Our students participate in the Accelerated Reader program through DEAR time. Three days a week our students read books silently at their independent reading level in their Advisory (homeroom) class. When they complete a book, they take a comprehension quiz and earn points towards an individualized reading goal. Students who reach their reading goal by the end of each semester are recognized and attend a banquet.
My hope for these materials is that they will build our classroom library and provide students with multiple options for books that match their Zone of Proximal Development in reading in order to allow ALL students significant improvement in their reading abilities.
I have also chosen books that explore topics related to our Character education and community building work such as books about Social justice, Latino cultures, and empathy building.
