This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I've been a teacher for 18 years and most of them have been in first grade. I love teaching first grade. This is the transition year when they go from learning how to read to reading to learn. This year I am teaching at a new school and my classroom doesn't have a library for the students. My project request will help me start a classroom library that students can benefit from for years to come.

If we want students to become readers, we need them to be reading!

I finished my Master's program in literacy and have taken the Read Act training to learn about the Science of Reading, what they both have in common is that kids need to have books to read. In my materials list I have included books that are of high interest to first graders. In my experience these are the books that they gravitate towards and want to read. In my class I learned that motivation is one of those important first steps to get kids reading. You will also see that I have included decodable books which supports the Science of Reading. These books allow students to use their skills to puzzle through the words and not guess.

I hope that you can help me begin to build my classroom library so I can put books within kids reach!
