I am a fifth grade teacher in a small rural town. My school is located in eastern North Carolina and is one of the poorest counties in the state. I am responsible for teaching 60 students reading and language arts. I also teach science and social studies to my homeroom class of 27 students. I expect my students to read every day as part of my daily classwork and homework assignments. I require my students to read from individual books as well as classroom sets that we all read together. I would like a classroom library to provide more reading opportunities for my students. As part of my daily reading I require my students to make entries into their reading journals as reflections on what they are reading and what they have learned. The wide reading my students participate in will allow them to make connections to other pieces of literature and subject areas. I like to use chapter books in lieu of regular reading books because the students tend to learn more and gain a better love of reading. Ultimately, the more my students read, the better readers they will become.
