My students need access to a variety of different leveled books as well as a wide range of genres, including fiction and non-fiction texts to help improve literacy skills
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The more you read, the more you will know!" -Dr. Seuss
A typical day in our classroom involves A LOT of literacy! Whether it's reading a non-fiction article, a short story during guided reading or a chapter book during Silent Reading time - we are always looking to improve our reading skills.
My students attend a high-poverty school with very little resources.
100% of the students are offered a free breakfast and lunch program. A large number of my students attend a before-school program AND an after-school program, leaving them at school for close to a total of 8-10 hours per day. There is very little parent involvement in my classroom, as most parents are busy with either work or attending school themselves.
With all of this data, it is so surprising that my students are still passionate about learning, regardless of their lack of resources. It is inspiring to be their educator and pushes me to gather more and more resources for them to thrive and further their love of learning.
My Project
The book selection I have requested varies in level and genre. The main goal for my students is to help them achieve the third grade benchmark reading level by the end of the year. An average 3rd grader should be able to read a Level Q book (Guided Reading Level) and as of right now, I have many students who are far below that benchmark. Some are as low as a level J, while others are stagnant at a level M or N. It takes the average student about 3-5 weeks to become fluent on one reading level, so it is imperative that there is a wide variety and selection of properly leveled books.
These books would be a spectacular addition to our classroom library since they are high interest and include a variety of fiction and non-fiction.
Donations to this project would be extremely appreciated and helpful to my students so that they can continue their journey in reading.
Students are so passionate about diving into a new book and I would love for there to be a wider variety of genre for them to choose from. I have personally contributed some new books to our classroom library a time or two, and I cannot explain the look on the students' faces when they see a new addition!
Thank you for taking the time to read this project!
