My Students
My students are in LOVE. With reading! Every morning after breakfast, they run across the room to the library and grab their favorite books. They drag the bookboxes around until they find the perfect spot, and then excitedly exclaim to their friends about what they are reading.
This is a typical morning in our first grade classroom.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners and are learning to read in a new language. Our school is full of love and learning, but unfortunately doesn't have the funds to purchase new boxes to hold all of my student's favorite books. Our current ones are falling apart and becoming unusable. Most are broken and can't be carried around the room. I don't want my student's love of reading to diminish just because our library is frustrating to use!
My Project
We buddy read several times a day, and the students also use the library during center time. It is easily their favorite times of the day. They also borrow books because most don't have any to read at home. Without an organized library, it is very difficult for them to choose the appropriate books at their level, as well as books that excite them! They'll often find a book they adore, only to lose it again in the mess.
With new bookboxes, our library will become both functional and gorgeous!
Students will be able to grab a box and find a comfy spot to read. Their fingers won't get pinched in the broken parts. They'll be able to easily locate a topic or level. And most of all, the library will be inviting! It will encourage not just reading, but discourse and excitement as well. My students adore books and take great care of the books - we just need boxes to help us organize!
