Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work extremely hard to create a strong reading environment in my classroom. I have independent reading time, independent reading days, and I also have a reading contest to encourage students to read. I also model my reading daily to show that I too read books.

My students are in the 7th grade in Queens, New York.

They are enthusiastic, sweet, and would be extremely grateful if they were able to receive new books. Although they are appreciative of what I have, I always feel so bad when they ask for a type of book or a specific book that I do not have. I have spent hundreds on my classroom library over the years and at this point, I am really tapped out. At my school, my administration and the parents are extremely open to all kinds of books and will be extremely happy if given this donation. Parents are always encouraging their children to read and often come to me with advice on what his/her child should be reading.

My Project

I envision these books to enhance my students' independent reading time. When students have books available to them and like what they read, they will then in turn begin to love to read. I want my library to be relevant to them and their needs/interests. The novels requested are based off of what they have expressed interest in and requested. I would also like to incorporate book clubs into my classroom where students are able to have educated discussions regarding his/her books. Students can find a connection to a book and that can change his/her life. In addition to wanting my students to love to read, reading has also been proven to increase test results. We are, unfortunately, in a test driven world and in order for students to be prepared for the test; they need to be well read. This will help his/her vocabulary, writing, and reading comprehension.

As stated above, this project will improve my classroom greatly by creating life long readers.

Sometimes all it takes is one book to create a non-reader to an avid reader. Reading is so important to student growth and I just want to help my students the best I can.
