My students need a quiet spot in the classroom when they are feeling overwhelmed, often from too much sensory input. A special area in the classroom offers the students a haven for self-regulation.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching the greatest group of preschool students who are eager to learn, and get to do so through play. My room is an early childhood special education class, with students ranging from 3 to 5 years of age. Our students have eligibilities that vary widely, including:
Developmental Delay, Down Syndrome, Speech / Language Impairment, and Intellectual Disability (formerly known as Mental Retardation).
We have a happy bunch of students who have fun and are always reaching out to learn about the world around them.
My Project
I am creating a classroom space for my preschool students with special needs, where they can take a break when they are feeling overwhelmed. Children sometimes don't have a way to self-regulate their emotions, and for students who have special needs, self-regulation can be even harder to achieve. Giving these 3 to 5 year old children a haven where they can be alone to regroup and take a break from overwhelming sensory input, or an inability to find their way through challenging emotions, is a necessity.
You can help create a classroom space where children can find the haven they need to regulate their emotions and find shelter from overwhelming sensory input.
I hope you'll consider making a big difference in the lives of preschoolers with special needs.
