Classroom Expectations

My Students

My sixth-grade and seventh-grade mathematicians come from all different backgrounds, but they are all eager to learn new math skills and concepts. I teach mostly regular education students, but have many students that are gifted or have learning disabilities that make learning more challenging. I want to make sure every student in my classroom has the tools they need to be successful.

Our school is a Title I school, and more than half of my students receive free and reduced-price lunch.

As a teacher, it is hard to know that many of our students go home to very little. It means so much to me that there are people out there willing to help my students be successful.

My Project

Our school has been going through a staff directed look at all aspects of our school to find areas we could improve upon. One area we decided needs some revamping is classroom expectations across campus. We are adopting a school wide classroom management strategy where students will understand expectations from classroom to classroom.

The tools in this project will help make sure that I am working within our new system and allow my students to be aware of each thing I am expecting at all times.

The lights would be incorporated in an expectations chart where I can turn on the light to tell them what voice level, amount of movement, etc. is appropriate for the current activity. I would use the doorbell to help my students understand when we are making transitions in the classroom. If I am changing lights or expectations the doorbell will ring, and they will be taught what to do when that happens.

These tools will be especially helpful for the special needs students I serve. Some of my students with special needs have a hard time understanding expectations or the shifts of classroom transitions. This will give them clear visual and auditory clues each time.
