This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a great class. They are full of energy and come to school ready to learn. My goal is to provide a safe learning environment for all of my students. Two-thirds of my students are from single parent homes and arrive at school hungry for food and knowledge. Some of my students come from a troubled home life. It is not their fault that they do not have basic school supplies.
I try and buy what I can, but I cannot afford to buy everything they need.
I want all of my students to enjoy school and be very successful. Students learn better by doing hands on projects and using manipulatives.
My Project
Teaching is all about the students. It is about creating lessons to engage and teach students. I use math interactive notebooks all year. In order to create their math notebooks, my students need pencils, scissors, glue sticks, erasers, and dry erase markers. Parents don't seem to buy enough of these items.
Interactive notebooks allow my students to take ownership of their work.
We use the RDW strategy. They cut out and paste the word problem in their notebook. They must draw their strategy and explain or defend their answer(s) in writing. I use dry erase boards and markers as a quick assessment.
Receiving these school supplies will ensure that all of my students are ready to get their journals done.
