Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 25 amazing third graders at a Title I school in the heart of the Bay Area. Basic classroom resources are very limited. Our community is ethnically and socioeconomically diverse, and I feel honored to be teaching at a school that celebrates and embraces cultural diversity. The teachers, staff, parents, and students truly make this school a special and unique place.
Despite living in one of the most wealthy regions in California, many of my students come from low-income families.
They face hardships that no child should have to face, yet they come to school with positive attitudes, smiles on their faces, and an enthusiasm for learning that is contagious. The majority of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and more than fifty percent of my students are English Language Learners.
My Project
As we approach the final few months of school I, like many teachers, am already preparing my classroom for a new group of students in the fall!
I want all of my students to feel confident and successful from the minute they walk into my classroom.
This starts on day one, when each child has a brand new pencil box filled with school supplies that will motivate and inspire them all year long. It is so exciting to see each child walk into the room on the first day, find their brand new name tag, and see a pencil box filled with classroom supplies waiting for them. Many of my students cannot afford basic classroom supplies of their own, so providing students with these resources on the very first day of school is essential.
The pencil boxes will hold their pencils, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, highlighters, and dry erase markers--tools that the students use daily. These boxes not only help them to have their materials handy, but it also teaches them to be responsible and organized with their belongings. The name tags will be placed on their desks and in their cubbies so that students have a special spot in the classroom to call their own. The people sticks are always decorated by students on the first day of school and are used all throughout the year as equity sticks when choosing groups or pairing students.
Providing my students with these basic supplies ensures that each and every student in my class has an equal start. Each of them will have the supplies and materials that they need in order to have a successful school year!
