My classroom is one of high expectations and mutual respect and my students exceed our expectations each and every day! They come into class with a hunger and curiosity for learning. Being a special day class in middle school, of course, poses its challenges but my students are resilient and have adapted at every turn!
Being a special day class where a lot of our services are dedicated to serving diverse learners (primarily autism with some speech impairments and other health impairments), we really adapt the curriculum to make learning relevant to our kids.
We want them to be functioning members of society and they have infinite potential.
My students are very proficient at computers, they love music and dancing and have recently done a lot of cooking-which they love. We try and make each day exciting for the students. Above all, we make sure to communicate to the students that they are loved and respected!
My Project
This project is all about the essentials! Often the basics are not provided in schools and teachers end up spending their own money to get supplies. We are in need of a new room divider so we can make a break area for our class and we also got the tent to create a cool down area for our kids.
This money will go towards materials such as chai tea latte mix (a customer favorite, sugar packets and other essentials that are needed to continue our coffee cart program which teaches the students independent living skills and food preparation.
The other materials such as printer ink and markers are things we need to create materials and conduct activities in class. For example the expo markers are used by our student to write the daily journal and the velcro is for us to make independent work stations. All these materials will be vital to our class.
