My students need dry erase boards and Chromebooks to help them focus and work on their interactive notebooks and to stay engaged in class by answering questions on the dry erase boards and holding them up.
Our middle school is a learning community that is committed to promoting academic excellence within a safe, nurturing environment that is responsive to the social, emotional, and intellectual needs each adolescent child. Ripp has more than 700 students enrolled and is Stamford’s largest middle school. The school community at Rippowam is a reflection of Stamford’s diverse population both ethnically and socio-economically. A predominant percentage of students come from low – mid-income families as 60% of the student population is on free/reduced lunch.
Teaching in a large urban district comes with its unique challenges. The families we serve rely on the public education system for more than the educational requirements set forth by the state and district. Students come through the door with a myriad of circumstances that can have an impact on their academic success and emotional well being.
Our students rely on us for what we can offer them in terms of academic enrichment, social-emotional support, and sometimes the bare necessities of life.
6% of my students are in truancy danger for missing 15% of the school days so far. Also, 15% of my students have two Fs or more.
Students can find difficulties in class and become disengaged, sometimes leading to adverse behaviors which can be disruptive to the learning process of other students. The dry-erase boards will help all students stay engaged as they will all have answer questions and respond to prompts on the boards and then hold them up. This interaction is intended to improve learning and grades by providing struggling students this alternative way to stay focused. Studies indicate that students who feel accomplished in school are more likely to attend and tend to do better academically. The Chromebooks will offer students the opportunity to keep up with their interactive notebooks that are vital to the new 6th grade social studies curriculum.
