Help me give my students a new aquaponics system and the materials to begin building a worm composting garden so we can better understand how the world is all connected!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our schools strives to create global citizens who enjoy the learning process through our International Baccalaureate and STEM curriculum. Our school is certified in both STEM and IB instruction. My classroom is filled with 18 first graders who come from very diverse homes, but are very eager to learn. Our is a Title 1 School with many students who receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. My students come from various backgrounds and cultures, but can all benefit from this project!
My Project
Help our class learn about plants and animals by supplying the materials to build our own classroom ecosystem. Students will learn how plants and fish work together by building an aquaponics system. The system will include a fish tank on the bottom with an AquaSprouts top layer that allows for plants to grow. Water from underneath will be pushed to the plants. The plants will them filter the water, taking all the nutrient they need, and returning fresh water to the fish. Last year, we built very simple systems using jars and netted pots, but with these materials and resources, students will get a better look and understanding of how plants and animals work together in the world. Students will see the plants grow from seeds with the help of the AquaSprouts garden and lights we will attach.
Students will learn how connected the world is through this project.
Students will learn how worms help plants grow through our worm composting bin. We will begin by using our leftover lunches and snacks to feed worms who will help make compost for our garden. We will then be able to grow vegetables that we will enjoy in our classroom and then we will feed the leftover scraps to the worms. I believe with all this, my students will have a much better understanding of how the world works.
