I have about 25 students per class, and on days when we have an intervention rotation, I can see as many as 300 students in two days. They are a lively bunch that keeps me on my toes, but I enjoy having the privilege of being their teacher. When we are in the middle of a hard math concept, I can see that they want to succeed, they just need a little guidance. When that light bulb goes off and I hear, "Ahhh, I got it", it makes my heart sing. The majority of our school is on free or reduce-priced lunches and a lot of those children come to school hungry. I also have students that come from broken homes and deal with things that no child should have to deal with.
This year I am having a big problem with difficult behavior in the classroom.
Students struggle to get along and that affects learning. I know that in the mind of a 6th grader, learning math may be at the bottom of the list of important things to focus on, but I want to motivate them to learn and grow.
My Project
Classroom behavior can be one of the hardest jobs for a teacher. I like to teach my students that school is their job. I use the app Class Dojo and I "pay" them for different tasks. Some of the tasks that they can earn money for are getting started on an assignment quickly, staying on task, asking meaningful questions, and participating in class. They can also earn Dojo points for turning their work in on time. Students do have to pay me if they lose a paper and I have to give them another one; I call it a copy fee. This teaches students responsibility and hopefully organization. They can also lose Dojo points for disrupting class and leaving the room a mess. At the end of the week, we have an auction where students will spend their fake Dojo points and purchase real items. Students must have all of their work turned in to participate in the auction which encourages homework to be completed in a timely fashion. Students look forward to their weekly auctions, but we are running out of items to auction. When I asked students what they would be most excited to see in the auction, I was shocked at some of their answers. The majority of my class wanted colored pens like the ones that I grade with and mechanical pencils. So many of my students come from difficult home lives and have nothing special to call their own, this auction gives them just a little something that is special and just for them. Please help me get items to reward my students' behavior, they totally deserve it!
