FULLY FUNDED! Ms. David's classroom raised $1,672

I teach second grade at a Title I school that is located in the "projects" in Opelousas, a small town in South Louisiana. I have 12 students in my class and these are students who were in large classes of 23+ students and were falling through the cracks. They have been in my class for 2 months and their grades have gone from D's and F's to A's and B's due to the one-on-one and tactile experiences I am able to provide such a small group. They love school and their self-esteem is incredible because of their success in my class. They are dreaming of their futures now instead of focusing on their failures. They thought they were "dumb" but now they say they are the smartest class in school! And they are!!! My class was created in October and was put together very quickly so that my students would not get too far behind in their work. As such, there were no computers available for my classroom. I love to use United Streaming and other learning websites in the classroom but am unable to because we have no computers. If I get a computer then not only can I use it in teaching but I can also set up computer time each day rotating the students to reinforce what I am teaching and allow them to practice skills and provide additional tactile, visual, and auditory experiences which are vital for learning. I am requesting a notebook computer so that the children can use it at their desks. Our classroom is extremely small and their desks barely fit in the room. The notebook computer would remedy the problem of space. I believe a computer in the classroon is essential because it opens the world up to students such as mine--who have never been outside their small town. For example, we are studying Chinatown in New York in our Reading Book. I would find websites associated with that and find photos and interactive information for the students to see and use. The children would get to see that it is a real place, and this would spark their imaginations in a way that just reading about it would not do. I would do this for all subjects. A computer would literally open up the world to my students and let their imaginations soar. Life can be very hard for my students, poverty affects all aspects of a child. Not only do they do without material things, but poverty can affect their spirit as well. A computer could help keep hope for their futures alive by showing them a world beyond the projects of Opelousas, Louisiana. It would reinforce my efforts to teach them that an education is their way out of poverty and that they can achieve their goals. Thank you for your kind consideration of my request, please know that I will do whatever is necessary to comply with this grant.
