Classroom Chromebooks: Improving Reading and Writing Through Technology
My students need chromebooks because technology is limited at our school and in their homes. These 6 chromebooks will allow the class to incorporate technology to support reading and writing during small-group rotations.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am starting my second year teaching and am looking forward to improving on what I learned last year. My students this year are Second Language Learners and I am planning on incorporating many techniques to ensure they get the support they need. Many of my students do not have technology at home, and I am trying to help prepare them for the future. Being at an inner-city school, these students may not always have all of the necessary resources or opportunities, but they work together as a class to make the best with what they are given. As their teacher, I am working to create a safe and engaging environment to help these students see the perks of education.
I am eager to help these students progress with their reading and fluency skills.
As I will be teaching English Language Learners, having engaging lessons is important to help them with the classwork. I would like to create a classroom environment where students' creativity is encouraged and their voices and opinions are heard and considered. Having extra technology in the class will ensure that creativity is being incorporated while they are still working on their language development.
My Project
This project is the beginning of my long-term goal to get a class set of chromebooks. Starting with 6 chromebooks will allow me to create group rotations in the classroom with more ease. This upcoming year, my class consists of English Language Learners who need extra support in reading. By having small groups, I will be able to focus on 5-6 students at a time, ensuring they get the proper support that is needed. Having chromebooks will give my students an extra resource to use during the small-group rotations.
These rotations will mostly focus on improving and supporting the reading and writing skills of my students.
My school has an online reading program that students are encouraged to use daily. However, due to limited technology (both in school and at home), many students only have access once a week. Having a rotation that can be done daily in my class, will ensure that my students are getting closer to their recommended weekly goal.
Having this set of chromebooks will also allow me to have students work on their typing and writing skills. I have a monthly writing assignment that students type up before publishing. Due to only having access to technology once a week, there is only so much that the students can finish in one day. These chromebooks will allow students to work on their typing and writing throughout the week so they can finish their work on time.
