Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the amazing privilege to teach 140 AMAZING students who overcome every obstacle that they are faced with each and every day. Those circumstances (Hurricane Harvey, poverty, single-parent homes) may make others cower with fear or fail to the weights of the world.
My students break barriers and continuously overcome challenges by working hard, having grit, and remaining resilient against the challenges of inner-city life.
My students are 85% Hispanic, 13% African American/Black, 1% White and 1% Asian Pacific Islander. Eighty percent of my students are English Language Learners and 20% are identified Gifted and Talented.
My Project
In order for students to understand chemistry, they must conduct experiments. This concept is abstract and best taught when students are able to complete chemical experiments and witness the evidence for themselves in real-life scenarios.
The chemicals selected are various chemicals needed to complete Sunset in a Bag, Elephant Toothpaste and other experiments to create precipitates.
Sunset in a Bag uses sodium bicarbonate, phenol red, and calcium chloride to show evidence of a chemical change through bubbles, color, and temperature changes. Elephant Toothpaste uses dishwashing liquid, dry yeast, and hydrogen peroxide to demonstrate evidence of a chemical change through bubble production and color and temperature change. Food coloring will further engage my students to the creativity that colors add to Elephant Toothpaste. Students can make the Elephant Toothpaste to resemble their toothpaste furthering their engagement.
