This year our classroom serves 6th graders in reading, writing, and communication. There are a variety of students from different backgrounds in our classroom as well. I have students who are emergent English language learners, fluent in Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean.
My advocacy group has identified the ‘distracted brain’ as a prevalent problem that should be addressed in school.
My boys are campaigning to eliminate distractions in school and while driving so that we can better train our brains to focus. They want to push the positive message that we need to get away from our phones so that we can be more receptive to learning and being present in the moment.
They are creating public service announcements for the car rider line. They are creating travel phone pockets, using zip-up pencil holders, and lastly, they are fundraising to create a cell phone charging station in each of the core classrooms. Students will be prompted to 'drop' their phones in the cell phone charging cradle. It benefits the classroom as a whole because it eliminates the distractions that can come from social media updates, missed calls, and text message alerts, while providing a safe place for their phone to recharge.
My Project
My advocacy boys identified the overuse of distractive technology as a problem for middle schoolers. They created public service announcements on cell phone abuse throughout the school to combat this issue.
Now, they want to provide a cell phone charging station in each of the 6th-grade classrooms to help push their agenda.
We already have a charging station in our classroom and have seen amazing results. Students are eager to place their phones in the cradle! In addition, they've reported that they feel less distracted because they don't feel their phone buzzing with notifications or phone calls.
Our hope is to increase student focus and create healthy habits with technology use.
