"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.
My elementary students are hungry for music and ready to share their new ideas with the world.
We work incredibly hard while having fun creating new sounds and stories. Students commit extra hours to their music education outside of school and submit non-required work for the room including written lyrics, notation sheets, and creative drawings of their interpretations of music. They excel at project based learning where they develop something new to share with everyone. They want to make a difference in the world around them with their personal mark emblazoned upon it.
My Project
Currently, my classroom floor is unforgivably hard and cold tile. My younger students can not stand sitting and moving on such a surface nor do they enjoy sitting in chairs. The carpet will be a godsend. Students and teachers will roll around, spread out, huddle together, and most importantly be comfortable while learning music and dance. Conveniently, the carpet will also help save space by letting us store chairs away. We simply won't need them anymore!
This will improve the learning environment in every one of my classes.
Children crave movement. When they are actively engaged, students absorb more information and stay attentive for longer periods of time. Students will enjoy coming to music even more and will spread the positive atmosphere to other corners of the school. Happy students, happy teacher, higher quality instruction.
