Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kindergarten students are always and will be my primary goal. Many of my students are from a very impoverished area of Miami Florida, 92% or more free lunch. There are times when the network to the school is down and I can not follow the schedule because my students are visual learners. I need educational Language Arts programs fill-ins to supplement their day. My students also need carpet to sit on during reading as a community setting.
My primary goal is to make my students feel as comfortable as possible while providing comfortable seating which does not include a cold hard floor.
We have carpet on the floor; however, it old deteriorated and the teacher that was in this room didn't want it, so I had no other choice but to keep it because the children have to sit on something. Many of my students have allergies and I feel that this filthy smelling carpet is not helping them even when the janitor it.
I want to provide my students with a positive classroom environment and nurturing atmosphere in which they can flourish in school and in their community.
My Project
Many of my students have many allergies and the filthy carpet that they sit on only escalates the situation. The carpet has been in this classroom for many years and for many teachers. I obtained the classroom this year and it kills me to watch my students walk into the classroom and their only option from sitting on their hard desk is walking to a filthy carpet that is stained beyond belief and almost impossible to clean. As a teacher, I wouldn't sit on it.
When many of my students are sitting on the carpet, I see them rubbing their eyes.
I see the children eyes turning red from sneezing and wheezing from the filth and stench of the carpet.
We used our carpet area as a meet and greet center, a community reading areas and as an area to sit using the Promethean board for many activities.
So, therefore, the carpet is essential to their overall health.
