My Project
Introducing a bearded dragon enclosure into our low-income, pre-K school for students with special needs would offer a unique and invaluable educational experience. This interactive learning tool would engage students in life sciences, teaching them about reptiles, their habitats, and the care required to maintain a healthy environment for a living creature. The hands-on care routines—such as feeding and cleaning—would instill a sense of responsibility and routine, which are essential life skills. Furthermore, the sensory experiences associated with the bearded dragon, including its textures and movements, would provide vital tactile and visual stimulation for our students, many of whom benefit greatly from sensory activities.
The presence of the bearded dragon could also play a significant role in the emotional and social development of our students.
Animals have a calming effect, often reducing anxiety and encouraging emotional connections. Through daily interactions, students would have the opportunity to develop empathy, patience, and social skills as they learn to care for and bond with the bearded dragon. Additionally, the pet would serve as a catalyst for enhancing language and communication skills, sparking conversations, expanding vocabulary, and offering both verbal and non-verbal communication practice.
Overall, the bearded dragon would not only enrich our school environment but also provide our students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. These experiences are crucial in supporting their development across various domains, ultimately laying a stronger foundation for their future education.
