Help me give my students a safe, calming place in the classroom to work through their emotions and physical responses so they can get back to learning.
My students come from a low income/high poverty district and are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom and often don't have self-regulation skills they need to be ready to learn.
Our students seek out support staff as a safe place to calm their bodies and minds in order to get back to learning.
Our school uses social-emotional curricula to teach our students how to self-regulate their behaviors and emotions. Sometimes my students need individual support to process their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Our students need a place in their classroom where they can take a few minutes to reset by calming their minds so they can quickly get back to learning.
My Project
The items requested will be used in various classrooms to create calm down corners so children do not need to always leave the learning environment. Students often need a safe place to take a break within their classroom. Children everywhere, especially in a low-income school district, face challenges in and outside of the classroom that impact their learning. We need to teach children how to cope with stressers and to self-regulate when they are having big feelings.
A calm down corner is spot in a classroom where a child can self-regulate or work through their emotions and physical responses so they can get back to learning.
The corner has tools to identify their emotions as well as items to help calm their minds and bodies. The items requested range from timers to fidget items to books.
