Classroom Cajon

Help me give my students a classroom cajon set so they can explore, expand, and develop their relationships with music while also improving their social skills and attending skills.

My Students

My students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of my students face health challenges due to the severity of their disability. Several of my students face additional struggles such as poverty or homelessness.

My students have an innate capacity for connection and self-expression in and through music experiences.

Through music, many of my students are able to more easily access communication and expression modalities that build their self-esteem, resilience, independence, and community involvement skills.

My students are learning skills such as joint attention, attention to task, and following directions so they can be successful in the special education classroom as well as in mainstream classrooms. My students are also learning social-emotional skills such as cooperation, calming, and coping skills, and kindness, so they can make and keep friends at school.

Every year, my students rehearse, design, and perform a showcase for the entire school. This year, we hope to showcase unique ways we've explored music, as well as ways we've built our relationships with music throughout the year.

My Project

My students are in a special education program at an arts school. All learning in this school happens in and through the arts. Students also share their arts-based learning in a weekly all-school gathering.

My students need opportunities to authentically explore and expand their relationships with music while they also work on IEP goals such as paying attention, following directions, and getting along with others.

This classroom cajon includes 8 cajons which can be used separately or fit together in a circle for group play experiences. It also includes a table which can raise the cajons for standing and/or wheelchair access.

I believe the classroom cajon will be a valuable addition to our music therapy classroom because it will allow us to participate in joint attention tasks, build group cohesion, and explore rhythmic patterns of different music cultures. I believe using it in a gathering performance would also be a unique way to showcase the arts-based learning my special education students have been working on throughout the year.
