My Students
I teach English in a high school in the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago. My students are spectacular rays of sunshine who are bound to go far in life. They are actively engaged in their learning, work hard, and persevere in the face of adversity. Not only that, but they are some of the kindest, most thoughtful children I've ever met. They brighten each and every day.
My Project
Later this year, we're planning to have a literature circle unit where students are able to choose between 4 books to read in small groups. We have some excellent books in our book room, but are lacking larger sets of contemporary texts.
Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid will provide students with a current and engaging choice in this unit.
It would be so exciting to be able to offer a contemporary book that will allow for great discussions around race, allyship, and privilege. Students will have the option of this text, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, and Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice.
