“Read alouds are an irresistible invitation to welcome children into the exciting world of literacy. During a read a loud, students are enveloped in a risk-free learning environment that removes the pressure of achievement, allowing the freedom to wonder, question, and enjoy material.”
My students are very enthusiastic readers.
I can say this now after two quarters of school, but I was not so sure this would be the case when we started. I started the year sharing my love of reading with the kids. Many jumped on board, but others were reluctant until they realized the endless possibilities with reading.
I discussed my Classroom Book a Day challenge to them at the end of the first quarter to see what the response would be with 6th graders. I was thrilled with the excitement students expressed.
My Project
Picture books deserve a place in a middle school classroom. They offer students an ability to learn language, word choice, ask questions, make inferences, become aware of oneself and so much more. All of this and more can help students in a non-threatening way through the use of picture books.
Your donation to my project will build classroom community and curiosity with my middle school students.
I'm looking forward to students using picture books to help them in so many facets of literacy, as well as, life in general. Through some readings, I've found that student behavior improves through the use of picture books and a love of literature. I'm always looking for ways to encourage reading in the classroom and a book-a-day will do just that.
Picture books, according to some English language arts experts, provide excellent opportunities to teach higher-level skills while still providing an engaging experience for older students who might think they don’t like to read. Many picture books are quite complex.
