My Project
My students live in a rural area in Upper Michigan. We are a high poverty school district with 100% of students eligible for free breakfast and lunch. While our district has a history of experiencing tough times, we are a close-knit community, and my students are resilient and creative.
When people ask me what I do for a living, I often pause.
While it might sound odd to tell people that I am an encourager of stories, that is exactly what I do. As a writer, my teaching philosophy takes root from my passion for language and for stories. I want my students to understand that their words matter.
Even though I've been teaching for 23 years, I love to find new ways to engage my students. I try to give my students multiple genres to respond to our work in class which is where a variety of school supplies come in.
Having a well stocked classroom with supplies definitely helps set up student success. While some of my students are able to come to school with paper and pencils, many cannot, so I love to have supplies for them.
During the school year I like to have my students participate in a creative projects, so supplies like post it notes come in handy for us to analyze literature and convey critical thinking and display for others to see.
Keeping the classroom environment fresh and organized is important. My students always appreciate soft boxes of tissue, Clorox Wipes to keep surfaces sanitized, and deodorizer to keep our classroom smelling good.
