Classroom Basics Needed in Order to Ensure Student Success!
My students need basic school supplies for their learning projects and I need basic equipment such as the whiteboard and paper cutter to make it all possible for them to learn and grow.
Students at our elementary school face many challenges that hinder their learning progress. Our school has the highest homeless and poverty rates in the state of Hawaii. 100% receive free breakfast and lunch. Over 95% of our students are Pacific Islanders with many having English as a second language.
This year I have returned to the classroom after spending 5 years as an academic coach and in school leadership.
I am so excited to be teaching math and social studies to around 90 6th graders (rotating classes in 3 periods). I love being a teacher and helping students to become the best that they can become.
Upon receiving my new assignment, I found my classroom to be in much need of change and repair. I spent days painting and cleaning, using my own funds for the materials. Now I am trying to organize the room and materials so that I can provide my students the best learning environment and opportunities for learning.
My Project
When I moved into my new classroom, I was so disappointed. First of all, it needed a face lift so I scrubbed, trashed old stuff and painted.
I found that basic learning materials and supplies were very old or non-existent.
In order to have a small learning group area, I need a whiteboard for instruction. The room does have one whiteboard up in front from whole class instruction, but it is way too high for me to completely reach, therefore, I would like a sturdy stepping stool.
I tried cutting some paper using the existing paper cutter, but it is so corroded and the blade dull, so it didn't work. My students do not bring a lot of supplies to school, therefore I would like to ask for basics to keep on hand such as the scissors, tape and skin tone colors so we can all do our learning projects together.
