Classroom Accessibility and Enhanced Learning

Help me give my students more resources to enhance their learning experience, through games and activities that relate to real-world experiences, and classroom aids for a student with a visual impairment to help him succeed.

My Project

Our intellectual disability department serves as a small community for our students within the high school. Our goal is to provide them not only with an education but an environment where they feel safe and valued. I love the community that we have with our students and watching them grow, as they become comfortable in school and with each other. Each student has their own interests and skills, and within our classroom each one of them flourishes.

The games that apply to real life and focus on math or language skills will help create a positive learning experience for our students as they also work on their social skills while interacting together.

The skeleton and organ models will provide a more hands-on and visual style of learning as our students learn about the human body. Many of our students respond well to visual cues, which makes physical models much more powerful for them, in addition to positive posters. The office supplies will help ensure that our students have the necessary supplies they need to perform in class. Additionally, the label maker will help keep things organized as they are assigned to each student. This will reduce supply sharing and reduce the spread of germs.

We also have a student with a visual impairment who is a freshman this year. He came to us with very few resources to help him in the classroom. The slant board, low vision paper and pens, line magnifier, mouse, and stylus will all aid this student in his school work. Additionally, the low-vision word search book, low-vision playing cards, and giant UNO cards will all help this student be able to interact with other students and have fun during choice time.
