Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The problem with history is the distance separates us from the real people that lived these lives. Primary source documents reveal the humanity of our ancestors lives. In our library we have no primary source documents so the ancients remain far removed from students imaginations.
All of my students come to my class speaking a language other than English.
Our classroom library has only a few books in Spanish and no bilingual books or books in Arabic, Korean, or any of the other languages my students speak.
I teach math, science, and history for new and beginning English Language Learning students in a high-need community. Students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, and Tagalog. 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended private schools in their home countries, and others students have been out of school for a few years before entering the US public school system.
My Project
The 20 books I've selected represent nearly 1000 years of Roman history. Students can read about the kings of Rome and learn what people thought of the Roman Republic. They'll be able to read about Caesar's rise to power from Caesar himself! Through the writings of Jerome they'll be able to hear about the transition to Christianity the Late Republic went through. Since the ancients will be able to speak for themselves students will be able to evaluate the textbooks positions. What makes the Loeb Classical Library series really great is that each book is written with the actual Latin text parallel to the English translation. Almost all of my students are native Spanish speakers and they'll be able to compare the evolution of Latin into Spanish. What a wonderful resource!
It can be very difficult to teach ancient history because all of the really good guest speakers are dead.
Written eyewitness accounts into the class makes dead people rise again to speak. Thank you for your support to make history alive!
