My students need various board games they can play with while parents are busy during parent-teacher conferences. I also want them to be exposed to classic games that are not often played (especially on their electronic devices).

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our sixth grade students collectively have a diverse background. We constantly engage in deep discussions about current and historical events and how different points of view should be heard and critically examined.

Sixty eight percent of students at our school qualify for free and reduced rate lunch and 40% of them are English Language Learners, which gives our classrooms many perspectives.

I want to give each one of them opportunities to express their opinions in safe, creative ways that they may not normally get.

My Project

My students often tell me that they are bored or don't know what to do when they have the rare chance of choosing an activity. If they aren't allowed to go on their iPads, it is hard for them to entertain themselves.

I want them to be exposed to games, that many of them have seen or heard of, but never played.

I have been able to introduce them to games like Monopoly and checkers, but our old sets are also steadily losing pieces.

I hope that games like Battleship and dominoes will not only give them a chance to be competitive but also help with strategizing in ways that Angry Birds doesn't quite cover.
