My Students
Our school is a Title One school. Though our students come from a variety of backgrounds and families including many military families, the majority of our students are living in poverty, mixed generational households, multiple families, or single parent households, as well as homeless families and families living in shelters. Our food backpack program, in which we send food home with students for the weekend, serves over eighty children; and our free and reduced lunch serves 67 percent of our population.
My Project
The first years of education are critical stepping stones to the scoop of the schooling a child will receive in later years. Many children enter school not ready for what lies ahead, developmentally as well as academically. Though some are lucky enough to be able to have role models in their lives who share great children's books and nursery rhymes and songs, students that do not receive that sort of precursor learning before entering school often are behind the curve and must play catch up to be on level musically and otherwise.
"Goodnight Moon- The Musical" gives a unique experience to the audience of youngsters and an opportunity to bring classic children's literature to life that teaches to the whole child.
I am hopeful that taking part in this rare field trip for kindergarteners will garner great connections to the classroom and continue to develop the curiosity that helps take learning to the next level. The students will not only have read the book in class, but participated in a unit study that includes aspects of the book that the students can relate to in their own lives. The classroom teachers have fantastic lessons to go along with the musical, lessons about self care and responsibility, routines and patterns, and sequencing. In addition, this experience will spur the students on to delve into more children's literature, not just that of Margaret Wise Brown, but also of the many wonderful picture books that are the cornerstone for kindergarten education and reading and literacy that open the whole world for them.
