Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Who knew that when we played board games as kids we were actually reinforcing educational standards? I sure didn't, but that\'s what I would like to bring to my students now.
Kids have a negative image that learning is boring. It\'s partly true, and it is wholly the responsibility of the teacher. While we can\'t spend the whole of learning time on games, they do prove to be an excellent reiforcer of academic skills.
I run the resource room in a low-income middle school in East San Jose, CA. I service students with Mild/ Moderate learning disabilities. During the time I meet with them, we work on foundational skills as well as supporting what they learn in other classes. Learning something twice is not always fun, but it can be!
I would like to bring kid-centered learning to my classroom through carefully selected classic board games to use during individual or center learning times. Do you remember shouting \"I sunk your battleship!\" triumphantly to your opponent? The board game Battleship is an excellent reiforcer of the math skills of the coordinate plane and reading points on a graph. It also employs logic and strategy, which are skills infused in the math standards framework.
Scrabble and Boggle are classic word games that allow students to use their knowledge of word families, word parts, spelling conventions, and creativity to form words from a random selection of letters.
