My students need tickets and transportation to go see the movie Selma.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students have all been talking about seeing the movie, Selma. They feel like it tells a part of their history that is not always told in history classes. We have been studying the Civil Rights Movement and they have loved learning about ordinary people who took a stand against injustice.
Every morning we start off the class with "What motivates you today?" Students go around and mention one thing that they are happy about, excited about, or thankful for.
Some responses include: I am thankful for waking up this morning, I am excited for my birthday this weekend, I am happy it is Friday! This activity is to help keep my students focused on the positives in their lives. My kids go through a lot of struggles and setbacks. I want to show them Selma to allow them to see what significant, positive changes can happen when ordinary people take a stand for what they believe in.
This project will allow the entire sophomore class to go see the movie, Selma. This is a movie they might not be able to see otherwise. This would be an amazing opportunity to get the students talking about the Civil Rights Movement, what was changed because of it, and what still needs improvement today in our society.
This project will make a difference for my students by showing them that learning about the Civil Rights Movement is important.
It will show them that people with all different backgrounds came together to fight for the rights of African Americans in this country. It will show them that the road to success if often long and hard but that you should not be discouraged.
