My students need 25 copies of both "Monster", by Walter Dean Myers and "Number the Stars", by Lois Lowry.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Zappia's classroom raised $503
This project is fully funded
Some of my students have never read a full chapter book before. I teach sixth grade in an elementary school, located in a very high-need community in St. Louis.
With standardized testing becoming the norm by which all achievement is measured, my students are constantly bombarded with test prep materials. Very rarely do they get the opportunity to enjoy reading an actual novel.
I read "Monster" last year with my students and they were instantly hooked, brought into the world of literature by the subject matter, the characters they could relate to, and the fact that the book is written like a movie script (they loved the fact that they would each get specific parts to read!). It was the first time all year that I'd seen my kids truly animated about reading and learning. A class set will give me the ability to put a book in each of their hands and let them know what it feels like to finish a pretty lengthy novel.
I'd like to continue the success with "Number the Stars" and give them an insight as to the history they may not have been exposed to as of yet.
Your help will ensure that my sixth graders leave my classroom ready for seventh grade. They will understand the joy of reading a novel and will have the confidence to read on their own.
