My Students
As a teacher in a high poverty and high mobility school, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they show up with smiles on their faces and are ready to learn. We have many students attending our school who were displaced by Hurricanes Maria and Irma from the Islands and Puerto Rico.
I work in a Title I school in Florida where 100% of our beautiful students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My hope is to provide these students with experiences, inside and outside of the classroom, that help them learn about tolerance, courage, and social responsibility.
My Project
These novel class sets will be used to explore our Florida State Standards in a fun and engaging way! Students gain important language and reading skills from reading novels. Hearing fluent reading helps our students acquire stronger vocabularies, build better comprehension skills, and gain confidence in their own reading.
The nonfiction novels, Night, Brown Girl Dreaming, and Hidden Figures, will be used in Literature Circles in class.
These are small group book clubs during class, where students have roles to perform each day: Summarizer, Vocabulary Luminary, Illustrator, and Connection Maker. The novels will bring about many wonderful conversations about perseverance and overcoming difficult circumstances.
