Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a great Title I school in the heart of Los Angeles. Many students are English language learners and their families have recently immigrated. This school offers a single-sex STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) program. My goal is to help students continue to develop into 21st century learners by focusing on real world problems, developing reading and writing, teaching students how to collaborate, incorporating technology, and fostering critical thinking.
The school's goal is to empower all students so that they are college and career ready.
As a history teacher, I focus on enhancing reading and writing skills so that students may discover the world for themselves and critically analyze the information they receive.
My Project
Understanding race is fundamental to understanding US history. A class set of "Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You" by Dr. Kendi will enable students to grasp abstract concepts such as race while critically analyzing US history.
Dr Kendi's book will enhance reading and writing skills as students engage with relevant material.
It will also foster powerful discussions. Students will be challenged to relate the US's past with its present. Once they have an in-depth understanding of the past, students can reimagine a better society and better future where Americans are united.
