This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my 6th grade science class, I strive to foster the love of reading and improve science literacy. I believe that using novel studies in the science classroom not only gives students exposure to different perspectives but also helps them develop an understanding of how science vocabulary applies to so many events in their lives.

Research also shares that increased science literacy can come from non-fiction novels that surround a science-related topic and is far more of a high-interest read for the majority of students than reading a textbook.

Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly is the nonfiction account of the Black women who worked as human “computers” at NASA from the 1930s to the 1960s. It chronicles the lives and achievements of three Black women and the racism and gender discrimination they overcame during World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Space Race.

The Young Readers Edition of this book is perfect for a book study during the Space unit in our science class. This year I read it aloud to my class. I would like to have a class set of the book so that next year students can follow along during the reading, or catch up on their own time if they missed class.
