Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are bilingual learners, and most of them have been at our school since kindergarten. As sixth graders, students have a lot of responsibility and are expected to be role models for their younger peers. They are cheerful, bright, and ready to learn individuals who crave challenge. My students value academics but are also intrigued by different cultures and diversity within the community surrounding them. In mathematics, they cheer when we solve problems, and they always ask for extra homework.
In Spanish class, they constantly crave to read more books and learn more about cultures and humans around the world.
All of these students deserve to have the materials they need to be constantly challenged. In a world in which technology is so prominent, we need more resources!
My Project
In Spanish class, we have a humanities based focus, where students study modern day civil rights. Our sixth graders have been exposed to so many news reports that discuss police brutality, justice, and how to strengthen a community.
This book is a wonderful piece of modern young adult fiction that is based in events that are (unfortunately) currently happening around us including African-American rights, police brutality, and several concepts from the Black Lives Matter movement.
Not only does this book teach compassion and empathy, it will also help them analyze perspectives. The book has a diverse character body that any student can relate to!
