I have been sharing the book "The Breadwinner" by Deborah Ellis with my fifth graders for the last three years. In the past I have only had one copy of this book which I purchased myself. Since Hurricane Katrina destroyed my school on Aug. 28, 2005, I have been trying to replace many of my teaching materials. Rather than simply replacing this one copy of the novel, I would like to have a class set of 20 books. I have found that students stay more focused during reading lessons if they have their own copy to look at and read along with. "The Breadwinner" is an amazing book which brings students an eye opening experience through literature. The story transports the reader to Afghanistan during the Taliban regime and into the life of a 12 year old girl who is forced to dress as a boy and work to support her family after her father is sent to prison for supporting western ideas. My students gain many valuable reading skills through my teaching and from this book.
