it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are a group of curious and energetic 4 and 5-year-olds. They are learning how to be an active participant in our classroom family as well as in our whole school family. We are not only teaching PreK academics but we are teaching them how to be kind, how to recognize acts of kindness, and to show appreciation for acts of kindness.
In our classroom, we have a kindness tree and when students are observed exhibiting an act of kindness they are asked to put a heart magnet onto a leaf of the tree when the tree is full the whole class gets a reward from the treasure box.
At the beginning of the school year, we had to model what an act of kindness was and point out acts of kindness. At this point in the year, we are observing students telling other students that their actions are kind and telling them to put hearts on the tree.
I have been trying to fill our treasure box with random trinkets to reward our class and need help keeping the box full. There are weeks when we could fill the tree in a day. Having mini Tic Tac Toe boards, mini Magna Doodles, sticker sheets, Mochi squishies, mini scratch pads, action figures, and animal and dinosaur figures will allow us to reward our acts of kindness instantly, rather than having to wait until our treasure box is replenished. My hope is to be able to have a variety of small items on hand so if we fill our tree daily they will be rewarded and it will continue to reinforce our acts of kindness.
