Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
ALLCPAHS is a Title I public charter school in the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Despite the lack of resources and dangers that are present in the neighborhood, our students have thrived, challenging themselves at each step of their academic journey. The typical students I serve are low income and first generation students. I work mostly 11th grade and 12th-grade students helping them apply for college, financial aid, scholarships, and sometimes just figuring out what comes after high school. I also work to create a culture in the school that encourages students to believe that they can attend and succeed in college.
My Project
For Decision Day, we will have students announce to their peers the college/post-secondary plan for the fall, have a photo booth set up and music playing. Students will also be able to enter a raffle for prizes, such as a Chromebook. Access to technology is a tool every student needs in order to be successful in college. Having a Chromebook as a prize for Decision Day will be a reward for my students that are graduating and want to further their education. The winner of the raffle will benefit tremendously from the Chromebook. This laptop will help them, especially because many of them don't have access to computers at home. Many of them only know how to type on their Smartphones. With a physical laptop, which will be very helpful for them in their future careers and college plans.
We want to encourage students to continue their education after high school and help them in their next chapter of their educational careers.
Decision Day will be a celebration of all of their accomplishments so far and what they will achieve in the future.
