it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Nooooo, please just one more chapter!!" For the past two years this is what I've heard at the end of read aloud time from my students. The book it titled, Becoming Naomi Leon, and my class absolutely loves it!
In September, I will open my classroom door to 27 bright and motivated smiling 4th grade faces!
The students walk in ready, willing, and able to work hard!
The downside is our school is located in a low socio economic area in New Jersey that was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. With a parent's permission, I uploaded a picture of my student's home which is currently unlivable. This is one example of a student who lost everything, including school supplies. Although students are motivated and want to learn, many times we do not have the funding to support activities or to buy materials that students need for success. Often times, students begin the year without the basic supplies that they need. This should not be the barrier that holds students back from reaching their full potential.
My Project
We need a class set of novel "Becoming Naomi Leon" by Pam Munoz Ryan. I currently have one single copy that I use during read aloud. We are also asking for a few informational texts to help students build background knowledge about the setting in the story.
I would love to share with my students that they will have their very own copy of the story to read along and enjoy during read aloud time!! Being able to provide my students with their own book will not only aid in comprehension but each child will be able to participate in a book discussions. During this time students discuss the events in the book and cite evidence using the book. Groups can turn to specific pages in the book during their discussion. Lastly, students can reference the novel during at-home assignments.
This project will help engage my students while helping me to foster a life-long love of literacy and learning.
Last year I even had a parent purchase this book to read along with her daughter because she talked about it so much with her family! My students will be reading, writing and participating in discussions about our class novel each and every day!
Thank you for taking our proposal into consideration!!!
